Seismic survey design,
The success of an exploration and exploitation campaign in an offshore, Land, Swamp or Transition Zone terrain, is strongly dependent on the quality of the seismic data acquired for the prospect. Given the enormous cost involved in fully developing an oil field to production, it is pertinent to ensure that the seismic data sets are of very good quality. The seismic data set is the foundation on which every other field development planning will be built. Moreso, the return on investment is only as good as the quality of the Seismic data.
A successful seismic data acquisition starts with a qualitative seismic survey design.
Seismic survey design has evolved over the years. From a simple 2-D survey design, to a more robust 3-D survey design, to a more complex 4-D survey design. The design to be used for the survey is determined by the client’s objectives and available budget
Seismic Data Acquisition
There are various types of seismic data acquisition. They are usually classified by the type of source, receiver or terrain. The source generates the seismic waves and the receiver records the reflections and/or refractions of the seismic waves.
Data acquisition involves applying a seismic energy source, such as a Vibroseis truck or shot-hole dynamite at a discrete surface location. The resulting energy is reflected back from interfaces where rock properties change.
By recording this reflected energy at an array of geophones placed in the ground surface, the results can be processed to produce an image of underground geological structures and a range of attributes that can be used to infer the physical rock properties.
Seismic Acquisition Supervision
In Seismic data acquisition, there is always the need for the client to ensure that the acquisition contractor is carrying out the acquisition according to specifications. Questions like “Did the surveyor cut the receiver line in the right place?”, “Did the drillers drill the shot hole to the required depth?”, “Did the recorders place the geophones, hydrophones, etc, correctly?”, “Has the seismologists used the correct bin size?” These and many more questions have to be answered for quality assurance. This is where our supervisors come in. They are actually the “eyes” of the client in the field. That is why they are referred to as “Bird dogs”.
